For some, discussing about matters like a Will is not an easy task, so how do we broach the subject of a funeral plan …?
There is this feeling that, once we have discussed a Will and its provisions, suddenly the Grim Reaper will appear and take us away. Obviously, such thing is not going to happen……
Much much worse is a discussion about a funeral plan because it forces us to imagine our funeral, our coffin, the hearse and people crying for our loss all dressed in black… However, have we ever thought to move the focus from ourselves to the ones we are going to leave behind? It can be argued that we are going to be dead anyway, it’s no concern of ours what the funeral is going to cost and how it is going to be… or is it?
There are two sides to a funeral plan: one financial and one extremely emotional.
By buying ourselves a funeral plan, we are buying a funeral how we want it at today’s prices as funeral prices are going up and up. Big deal? Well, actually yes! First and foremost, our children will not have to try and find the money to pay for our funeral. Moreover, if our estate is into Inheritance Tax, by paying for a funeral plan, we are taking that money out of our estate, thus reducing Inheritance Tax costs. Everything to gain for those left behind and nothing to lose.
Then there is the emotional side and I am getting really personal here, because I have been through it myself 9 years ago. In those difficult times, we need to keep a clear enough mind to organise the care of our loved one, to choose a coffin, Church arrangements, flowers, viewing of the deceased. At a time when you only need to be allowed to grieve, these arrangements slap you in the face… moreover organising a funeral, even if we try and do it the way our loved ones would have wanted, we struggle to think about what they told us in the past….if they ever did so….A funeral plan makes sure that those left behind don’t have to make those choices: a Funeral Director will already be appointed and all the details arranged. We will be allowed to grieve and we will smile through our tears being grateful that we have been spared this pain.
Funeral Plan? Yes, please!
